Notre Dame School
Fostering Faith, Wisdom, and Global Citizenship
Notre Dame School is a distinguished Catholic educational institution located within the Machakos Diocese, Kenya. Our mission-driven work is expertly guided and managed by the Notre Dame Sisters Society, Kenya. At the heart of our governance and educational philosophy lies a deep commitment to Christian principles, theology, and philosophy, ensuring that every decision is rooted in values that shape compassionate and ethical leaders.
Our Legacy: A Global Tradition of Excellence
Our school stands as a beacon of an international educational tradition, tracing its spiritual heritage back to St. Julie Billiart of France, who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Namur in 1804.
This powerful, charismatic spirit—of “finding God’s goodness in everything”—was faithfully carried forward by Sister Mary Aloysia Wolbring, who established the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Coesfeld, Germany, in 1850.
Inspired by the founding charism of St. Julie and Sister Mary Aloysia, the Notre Dame community has established a robust global presence, giving witness to God’s love through extensive involvement in educational, social, and medical services across dozens of countries, including the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Notre Dame in East Africa
The spirit of Notre Dame took root in East Africa to serve the local community with dedication and academic rigour:
- Tanzania: The first Notre Dame School foundation in Africa was established in Njiro, Tanzania, in 2002.
- Kenya: The second foundation, Notre Dame School Mlolongo, was proudly started in Kenya in 2004, offering a professional and nurturing environment for academic and spiritual growth.
Today, the Notre Dame Sisters continue to administer and contribute their invaluable services to education in East Africa, upholding a standard of excellence that prepares students not just for careers, but for a life of purpose.

To impart Christian values to transform self and society. To instil in every child the quest for knowledge and wonder to provide an atmosphere for creative thinking. To create awareness, respect and love for nature and environment.
Our History
Founded in Coesfeld, Germany in 1850, the Sisters of Notre Dame began with two visionary educators, Hilligonde Wolbring (Sister Maria Aloysia) and Elisabeth Kühling (Sister Maria Ignatia) who opened their hearts and homes to orphaned and neglected children. Rooted in the spiritual tradition of St. Julie Billiart, their mission expanded from education to healthcare, social justice, and pastoral care across five continents. From humble beginnings, the Sisters have grown into a global congregation, serving in 19 countries. Celebrating 175 Years of Mission and Ministry In 2025, the Sisters of Notre Dame mark their 175th Jubilee with the theme:
